I mean, it's very common in real life that you got umpteen Will Smiths, Dan Meyers or Laura Robsons. I admit, they look not as similar as New Edenists (maybe Incarna can help with that) and you got a way greater variety for ancestry/adresses. But in the end it always boils down to social insurance numbers, no?
Don't we have unique char IDs which could make it work in the same way?

Originally by: NewGit Why would you even want the same name as someone else, unless you are trying to cash in on their fame or ruin their reputation ? And does anyone really want to see "John Smith" on their overview 500 times ? Imagine a large fleet battle: FC: all ships - Primary John Smith Squaddie: Which one ? FC: The one that's 24, wait, 22, no, 27. D@mn it, the one that's 31 kms away. Sh|t, not that one, the other one ! Squaddie: But that is one of our John Smiths ! FC: OK, fine, primary the one idiot on the field that isn't named John Smith. Squaddie: But the only one not named John Smith is you ! FC: Exactly. I'm outa here !
You know you can assign targets in fleets now? So need for calling primaries anymore.. just rclick them and select: "Broadcast Target"

Originally by: Zan Shiro eve is a database with a game built on top of it basically. Databases don't like redundancy in key fields. Its not very good for them. Your name is a key field in that database.
Are you sure? But hypothetically spoken, IDs would be unique enough for key-fields, wouldn't they? Works with banks and everything else in the world..
Originally by: Muul Udonii Because game mechanics require them to be unique. Like the 'calling primary' issue, what about issuing a contract or starting a convo. How would you know which 'John Smith' was the one you wanted to contract your Nyx to?
Sure, just typing the name of a char won't be selective enough anymore then.. let's say you type in 'John Smith'.. then a List comes up with all John Smiths and their details like birth date/corp/alliance. And if the freaking UI would be able to remember your contacts better you wouldn't need to go through this every time. But I don't see this as a complete show stopper..

Originally by: Norian Lonark Why would anyone want this. All it would add is more confusion and hassle. You wouldn't even be able to talk to someone without checking there char ids first. This really is a case of trying to fix something that isn't broke.
Just trying to think ahead.. CCP just patched the API and drilled some stuff in there from 32bit to 64bit, because the old IDs run out of capacity.
When will the names for chars reach this point? >>> The Noob #3: The random name generator Afaik CCP never deleted chars.. not even Trials. So any trial has got the possibility to remove 3 names from all the possible choices. And everyone who played but stopped keeps his chars too.. if he comes back later he still has got his chars.
Now some will come and say - recycle them. Where do you draw the line? For instance, if you came back after 1-2-3 years break and all your chars are named: <race>Citizen####### and some dude is running around with your name. How would you find that?

I never had an issue with naming new chars. Be more creative.

IIRC the EULA guarantees 6 months. That's where CCP could draw the line if they feel like it. Sure some people might get upset if CCP would ever wipe old accounts, but the same amount of people will be happy to get the name they wanted.
Well.. for starters, they don't get the name they wanted.. not in 100% of the cases.. otherwise you wouldn't have told me above that I should be more creative, no?
We now got 380,000 accounts with a possible 1,140,000 different characters. What happens when Incarna hits? Or Dust? I'm pretty sure I don't want to see Chribba_XIV and N1ka D3ka1a342 or XxxTres FarmerxxX, wouldn't you? I'd rather have CCP sat down for a mere 10 minutes and think of something to avoid this clutter..

People have different birthdates/starter-non-player-corps/player-corps/alliances.. You already got some unique stats:
Guilliman R Gallente, Jin-Mei First registered with: Federal Navy Academy Registration Date: 22/04/2007 09:49 Current registered with: Northstar Cabal
Maybe we can get some kind of address? How does the address of the HQ of your current corp sound?
HQ Northstar Cabal Office 23A Block B-342 Jita IV - Moon 4 - Caldari Navy Assembly Plant
Just a matter of getting this data used in a way so we don't get mad/freak out. Especially roleplayers should like this.

So, none of you is in fear of the doppelganger as up until now the most cons brought up had been about how much workload (assumption: if implemented badly) and grief it would cause?
